Most Recent Status Reports:

Alignment & Coordination: System-Wide (ACSW) – Susan Boyanovsky:

Career (Degree) Pathways (CPTH) - Scott Giltz:

First joint meeting immediately preceding the Steering Committee meeting on October 25 expected to review data gathering efforts to establish a baseline of how many students are currently in PTE, pre-professional, and STEM-emphasis college prep classes.

Respectfully submitted, Jo Oshiro 10/24/06

Alignment & Coordination: Curricular & Co-curricular (ACCC) – Dick Knight:

The Network of Informal STEM Educators' conference pre-invite was emailed to about 80 people early in the week of October 16, and survey results are being collected. A gentle reminder to pre-register will go out soon. The committee is preparing to review the list of invitees for a second round of pre-invites. Formal invitations will go out early in November. Ray Vandiver and Marilyn Johnson of OMSI expect to secure, through personal contact at an upcoming conference, a speaker from the analagous organization to NOISE in Texas; they will also draft a strawman agenda and format for the event, to be held on Monday, February 5, 2007.
Respectfully submitted, Jo Oshiro 10/24/06

Diversity (DIVR) – Eda Davis-Butts:

Eda is working on a white paper outlining best practices for establishing inclusive STEM enrichment programs; Jo has reviewed it.  We are expecting to release it to the entire committee this week, in preparation for the next Diversity Committee meeting October 30.
Respectfully submitted, Jo Oshiro, 10/24/06

  3. Dissemination of information on resources for students and teachers (eg, BEC Techno Supersite, grant/program opportunities, professional development opportunities.
  4. Student-based materials on “what is engineering”, how to prepare, educational opportunities, how engineering is entry point to other careers such as marketing, logistics management, etc; use of creative design to attract teen readers (website or hard copy, tee shirts, etc.).
  5. Materials for specific populations, such as under-served students, under-represented students (e.g, “For Girls Only” brochure on engineering).
  6. Compilation and use of data to support various efforts to answer commonly asked questions and concerns.
  7. Outreach to business groups and foundations to gain support and endorsement.
  8. Public outreach on “what’s in it for me” to have more trained engineers in the state.
