Steering Committee Strategy Session Notes March 15, 2006

Completed notes posted March 17, 1:30 pm - Jo

This is a short status report, previously emailed to members. The OPAS Steering Committee Strategy Session met March 15 to craft a concise vision/mission/strategy statement.  This four hour session was held in Salem. We got a late start, and had some phone issues.  My apologies to anyone who tried to attend by phone but could not find the information.

Attending:  Bill Becker, new member Aubrey Clark of Intel, Bruce, Jo, Susan Boyanovsky, Di Saunders, Ginger Redlinger, Larry Flick, Scott Huff (ph), Dick Knight (ph).

Larry Flick brought more resources, which he previously sent out via email – a summary of NSF work addressing most of the same issues as OPAS, ABET EC2000 website – Criteria for Accrediting Engineering programs. These are posted under Resources on the main Steering Committee webpage.

We worked over the two page strawman statement that Bruce distributed Tuesday evening via email.  Bill Becker was instrumental in moving the committee to a more concise and inspirational statement – separate vision from goals.  Bruce introduced his diagram (page 2 of the Strawman) as an aid for someone who has to stand up and give a short dog-and-pony show of what OPAS is, does, how it intends to influence the system.

We had some good discussions about focus, priorities, who should own/host/be a home for OPAS, and how could it accomplish some of this systemic change.

This information will be used to refine the strawman, and probably that is what you will see out of it, rather than detailed notes of the meeting.

Please feel free to add, correct, inquire or offer additional resources for the webpage.  I’ll get the notes & resources from today up on the website early next week.  At the moment, I am drowning in grant review & first-meeting-setup.

These subcommittees have had at least one meeting:

Diversity (DIVR), Instructional Professional Development (IPD) – lots of resource info on its way; Marketing Engineering & Applied Science Careers (MKTC) and Student Success: Access, Motivation, Retention (SAMR).  Some have been changing, enhancing, or refocusing their missions and recommendations.  Most are concerned about their overlap with, potential contributions to, or input needed from other committees.  Many are still recruiting.

These subcommittees have their first meeting scheduled next week:

  • Alignment & Coordination System Wide (ACSW) – 3/21
  • Alignment & Coordination: Curricula & Co-curricula – 3/24

The Career (Degree) Pathways subcommittee is still an orphan, and Bruce and I have been letting it lay low, at least for the moment.

The next OPAS Steering Committee meeting is next Wednesday, March 22, 2006 3:30 – 5:00 here in the Capital Center.  I have asked Bruce to review the draft agenda posted on the website (I make these things up, but try do so out of thick air rather than thin …)  Phone bridge info is forthcoming.

Respectfully submitted,

Jo Oshiro
