Detailed Notes for July 24, 2007 - coming soon

Summary: (Italics indicate activity since the meeting.) Four members of the workgroup met with Bob Broeg of WOU, Past Chair of the OCCC (Oregon Council of Computer Chairs), to explore possible opportunities and challenges for a statewide articulation agreement for CS (Computer Science) degrees, analogous to the Manufacturing Engineering Technology Statewide Articulation Agreement.  The OCCC promotes and coordinates computer curriculum among the public community colleges and public universities in Oregon.

Issues and considerations in creating such an agreement:

Tom and Susan will develop a scope of work statement for this project, and investigate possible funding and additional staff support.  Scott start conversations with potential recruits once this summary is in his hands.

The Manufacturing Engineering Technology Statewide Articulation Agreement has been completely signed off; Jo can widely distribute the “Good News for Students” article.  This information was well-received at both OACTE (Oregon Association of Career and Technical Educators) in April and the NW Youth Career Expo in May.  Further publicity materials will  be developed, especially for high school students and counselors.  Again, it was emphasized that the Articulation agreement is a bundling of courses rather than a conferred degree or an extensive implementation of new curricula.

Much of the continuing work of this committee is planned to be done offline.  The next meeting will probably be scheduled for October.

Respectfully submitted, Jo Oshiro, 7/31/07

Detailed Notes April 25, 2007

Summary: Susan Boyanovsky will be resigning as chair of Pathways when the statewide articulation agreement on Manufacturing Engineering Technology is done.  Susan consulted with the committee about the language of that agreement, and the structure for reviewing that agreement annually, in early fall.  Tom Thompson of ODE agreed to chair the workgroup.

The presentation of the Manufacturing Engineering Technology articulation agreement and pathway documentation at the Oregon Association of Career and Technical Educators’ (OACTE) Conference in April went well.  Susan was happy with the materials, the presentation, and the attendance of about 30.  Attendees were interested in Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and statewide articulation; schools are trying to figure out how they can fit.  One of the presenters’ messages was that CTE has pathways to baccalaureate degrees.

Jo will discuss with the OUS Communications Department a press release or similar vehicle on the articulation agreement for distribution to the PTE Deans, regional coordinators, counselors, Manufacturing 21, Mimi Maduro, Candace Robeck (webmistress), Lita Colligan, and the presidents of OCTM, OSTA, OMEC, OSEC, and others.  Part of this list was sent an email on May 18, after Jo and Endi Hartigan at OUS decided that a press release was not an adequately targeted tool. Jo will fix the oversights.

Additional means of getting the message out were discussed, including a booth at the NW Youth Career Expo.  Because of lack of staffing for the booth, Jo made arrangements for the poster/brochures and a display board of the poster to share an OIT booth, staffed in part by Margi Smith Lee.

A discussion of next steps resulted in Scott Giltz committing to do an informal poll to see if there is a likely next candidate degree for a statewide articulation program; the hunch of the workgroup is that it will be electrical engineering.  Bruce Schafer later suggested that Computer Science may also be a possibility. More poster/brochures are needed.

The document “Satellite View Career Pathways Flyover for High School Students” is worth pursuing as a longer term project, aimed primarily at teachers, secondarily at counselors.  The suggestion was made to target schools with PLTW and work with them to figure out how to optimally package the information.

The next meeting is tentatively planned for July.

Respectfully submitted, Jo Oshiro, June 4, 2007

Detailed Notes for March 19, 2007

Summary for March 19, 2007: The meeting goal was finalizing all talking points for the April 19 presentation to OACTE, “Manufacturing Engineering Technology: A Statewide Partnership and Career Pathway”.  The group reviewed the draft webpage supporting this presentation and decided to divide materials into those discussed during the presentation, and those kept as additional references and links.

The workgroup identified nominated some possible tasks for the group to work on after the presentation:

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 25, 1:00 – 3:00 in Wilsonville.

Detailed Notes for February 15, 2007

Summary for February 15, 2007: The Pathways roster is now at 9 members including Jo, and 3 advisors/interested observers. The next meeting is on Monday, March 19. Current work focuses on the development of materials for Susan's presentation of the Manufacturing Technology Articulation Agreement at the OACTE (Oregon Association of Career and Technical Educators) conference in mid-April. These draft materials are avaiable at http://opas.ous.edu///Workgroups2007/Pathways/OACTE_Presentation_Apr07.html. These materials will be available on the OPAS website while the state pathways website is under development. Most of these documents are aimed at counselors and students working with counselors and include occupational outlook and wage data, job descriptions, links to engineering recruiting sites hosted by professional associations, and an course crosswalk across institutions.
