Draft Strategy for Critique August 21, 2007:

Increase students’ exposure to engineering and applied science through active learning, student inquiry, engineering problem solving, and creative teamwork.
 
OPAS Prepare seeks to increase the number of students who choose and persist to success in engineering and applied science by identifying and supporting programs that have demonstrated success and are capable of being offered much more broadly by schools statewide. Solid academic preparation in science and math is essential. In addition, re-engineering education can play an important role in the preparation of many students. To serve the goals of OPAS, Oregon needs a collection of such programs that address both traditional engineering disciplines and applied science disciplines like computer science."

Roster

Co-chair Sean Gallagher Superintendent, Lake County Sean taught Math and CS at the secondary and community college level for 10 years before diving into public school administration. He is currently a strong supporter of secondary school improvement efforts to help ensure all students succeed in a post-secondary environment. He began his college career at OIT studying engineering.
Co-chair Dick Knight Educational Activist; Chair, Friends of Saturday Academy Dick is active on many boards and groups dealing with engineering education in Oregon; he was instrumental in bringing NWSE up to speed as an ISEF affiliate.
Bill Becker Director, Center for Science Education, PSU Bill is working on upgrading the state's Science Standards via the Oregon State Assessment and Content Panel for Science. He's a pretty serious cyclist and has done Cycle Oregon.
Jay Bockelman Program Director, Software Engineering Technology, OIT Jay is working on starting a course in embedded engineering at OIT and will spend part of his summer (2007) teaching kids grades 7-12 to write computer games at OIT's Video Game Design Day Camp in Klamath Falls.
Chris Brooks President and Board Chair, TechStart Education Foundation
Chris is the former CTO of Corillian, a world-wide leader in online banking acquired by CheckFree in 2007. He oversees the board and programming for TechStart, the charitable arm of the Software Association of Oregon. He is also coaches youth football, elementary and middle school chess teams, and serves as an adult leader for Boy Scouts, among other youth-oriented involvments.
Steve Day Science Curriculum Specialist, Beaverton School District Steve successfully staged a series of two-week summer camps to show underrepresented populations the joys of STEM education -- the program was called "Building STEaM".
Larry Flick Chair, Department of Math and Science Education, OSU Larry is widely read and a wonderful resource for literature reviews and summaries.
Bill Lesh Principal, The Center for Advanced Learning Bill is an enthusiastic champion for close involvement between schools and business. He is also a caring principal who attends his students' major events, such as the First Robotics Regional Competition in March.
Ellen Lyon Teacher on Special Assignment, School Improvement Ellen is a PhD science teacher who trained as a Project Lead the Way Instructor and taught PLTW for one year at Glencoe High School.
Walt Mayberry Activist and Volunteer Walt is Head Judge and Hillsboro High tournament director for the Oregon Robotics Tournament and Outreach Program’s FIRST Lego League program.  He is a retired technology executive who co-founded Sequent Computer Systems and earlier worked at Intel and Burroughs.  He has helped numerous schools with instructional technology and taught high school computer science, including AP.  He currently has two kids in college – one at a public university in Washington and the other at a private university in California.  He will be riding his 9th Cycle Oregon this fall
Jo Oshiro OPAS Staff Support Jo came to OPAS after 10 years "at home" as personal assistant to a kid who's done soccer, Girl Scouts, LEGO Robotics, marching band. She thinks that STEM education is more closely allied to arts education than most people are willing to admit, and believes passionately in active learning and immersion. In a previous life, Jo did a variety of computer programming and support.
Tom Thompson Industrial and Engineering Systems Specialist, Oregon Department of Education Tom began his current position at ODE in January; he taught science at Philomath High for years. He's also on the OPAS Steering Committee, and chairs the Pathways Workgroup.

Advisors and Interested Observers - on the listserv to stay informed, not attending meetings regularly

Tim Brower Affiliate Director for Project Lead The Way in Oregon ... as well as Chair of the Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Technology Department at OIT. He worked as an engineer at Lockheed Martin Corp., AVCO Systems Division and Bonneville Power Administration before joining OIT's faculty in 1998. He hosts a barbecue for PLTW Summer Training Institute teachers at his house ... to compensate for working them so hard for two weeks?
Eda Davis-Butts Director of SMILE (Science and Math Investigate Learning Experiences) OSU Eda chairs the OPAS Initiative Succeed Strategy Workgroup and is an articulate and well-traveled champion for diversity and creating a college-going culture. She likes the symphony.
Don Domes PTE Teacher, Hillsboro High School Don is a passionate advocate of hands-on education, and changing the system through grass roots activism. He's coached LEGO Robotics, and this year has a Lemelson InvenTeam.
John McKee Division Dean for Science and Engineering , PCC Sylvania For the past year and a half John served as Division Dean for Science and Computer Technology at PCC Sylvania.  Prior to PCC he was an Instructional Dean at Clark College and an instructional administrator at Columbia Gorge and Central Oregon Community Colleges. John holds a doctorate in Education from OSU and Masters and Baccalaureate degrees from Alaska Pacific University. 
Steffen Moller Dean, Business, Math, Sciences, Clackamas Community College Steffen joined OPAS in the fall of 2007, replacing Scott Giltz on both the Steering Committee and Pathways Workgroup. Steffen has served as Dean of Instruction for the Business, Math and Sciences division at Clackamas Community College since March of 2007. Prior to that he was chair (and taught) for the computer science department. He has taught at both the college and high school levels.
John Ossowski Program and Advancement Manager for the Software Association of Oregon Foundation As one of the foundation’s projects, John works with enthusiastic educators to produce SuperQuest – a unique professional development series designed to support the work of technology educators across the region.
Chris Steiner Teacher on Special Assignment, School Improvement Team, Hillsboro School District Chris has been a huge help to the Oregon Robotics Tournament Outreach Program, which stages several tournaments, including the Championship, in Hillsboro. Chris also attended the NOISE (Network of Informal STEM Educators) kick-off conference at OMSI.
Michal Young Computer Science Professor, University of Oregon Michal is also on the OPAS Steering Committee, the OPAS Committee that helped stage the NOISE (Network of Informal STEM Educators) conference, the ETIC CS Taskforce, and is active in professional associations. He's also a recreational cyclist and is writing a textbook on Software QA with some Italian co-authors -- last year, they met in China to work on the book. Michal is on sabbatical in Switzerland from January - June 2008.
