Agenda #19- March 12, 2009

Meeting Objective Update on OPAS & related activity
Phone In SAME number: 1.888.285.4585 id 353291
3:30 - 3:35 A. Ken Cone from OUS Industry Affairs office sitting in today -- possible additional staff time
3:35 - 4:00 B. ETIC & OPAS Activity
  • ETIC Funds -- EBL and additional - xlsx -- unchanged since last meeting
  • February 4th Meeting -- All-OPAS Workgroups, ETIC CSTF, ETIC Student Marketing
    • Webpage has goals, learnings, supporting materials -- final report in pdf format has moved down the pareto chart unless someone has a need for it; most recent update includes flip-chart transcriptions.
    • Business Plans & Funding: The slowly evolving conversation between Bruce and OUS Procurements has wound on; Some data points:
      • Discussion of how to configure RFPs and their OUS-internal counterparts is ongoing: internal vs external, how many, etc. trying to balance the targeted nature of our strategies with process and implementation considerations.
      • For external organizations, per Bruce, March 3, 2009: "The OUS Contracts Office has informed me that any ETIC/OPAS funds that would be used to implement the OPAS strategy by organizations outside the university system will be subject to a competitive bidding process that is orchestrated via a formal Request For Proposals process like the process we used in the summer of 2007.   The RFP would set out the goals and criteria that the proposals should address and would be open to all educational and non-profit organizations.   Any detailed planning done OPAS committees in advance of this RFP process is for the purpose for refining the goals and the criteria that the RFP will use and to establish the general feasibility of the elements of the strategy and approximate budgets that would be used to implement the OPAS strategy during the biennium that starts July 2009."
      • BEC has declined to further pursue this avenue for teacher internship funding; Motivate endorsed redirecting those dollars to student internships
  • SMILE Middle School Engineering Challenge - site visit March 6 by Jo; this year seemed more on task; additional partnerships with entrepreneurial group on campus; tighter linkage to Science and Math education cohort acting as mentor/instructors and greater collaboration with Mechanical Engineering capstone students led to the inclusion of Customer vs. Engineering requirements and TQM tools in the student activities. Theme: energy. Challenge: Make a wind generator; wire a house. Follow-on at school: couple them
  • Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth Family Academic Programs
    • Robotics, PSU, April 4, 2009
    • Outreach recruiting of 25 adult-child pairs at $40 rather than $160 through Saturday Academy & PSU Educational Equity; subsidy by JHU and OUS
    • Additional marketing through OPAS listservs, ODE TAG liaison done March 11
  • Jo is working on a list of foundations and corporate philanthropies which she hopes to circulate shortly; mostly culled from the internet.
4:00 - 4:10

C. Open Action Items/ Round table

  • PLTW Critique -- Judy D'Amico thanked us; Jo previously circulated the email.
  • Community Conversation: The retrospective document is finalized and posted on the webpage documenting the event
4:10 - 4:55

D. Future planning

  • What is the appropriate follow-up to the Community Conversation: Diversity in CS workshop?
  • Does the Succeed Workgroup want to move forward with some project around appropriate design guidelines and metrics and their use in grant and mini-grant situations? Did Jo even capture this sentiment correctly?
4:55 - 5:00 Next Meeting -- Thursday, April 24, 2009 3:30 - 5:00
